ISO Specifications
The ISO 9650 specification has been implemented since 2005, which marked the step forward in liferaft design.
An ISO 9650 Type-1 Liferaft is designed for open ocean navigation and adapted for the risks associated with long voyages including high seas and heavy winds. Both types of raft within this specification can inflate properly up to 65°c and between -15°c and 0°c. The ISO 9650 Type-1 standard is a requirement of all liferafts used on commercial/charter vessels.
An ISO 9650 Type-2 is designed for coastal and inshore waters navigation and adapted for the risks associated with more sheltered waters where moderate conditions may be met, in areas such as coastal waters, large bays, estuaries, lakes and rivers. This specification requires rafts to inflate properly between the air temperatures of 0 and + 65°c.
